Fix testing help needed for xml-rpc endpoint issues

Posted on 16 Jul 09 by John Bickerstaff

We’ve implemented a fix in trunk for the XML RPC issue some WordPress app users have experienced. I’m looking for volunteers who have had that problem.  The error you see begins:

“We could not find the XML-RPC service for your blog”.

What I need to do is test the fix to be sure I’ve caught any edge cases. This means either A) temporary access to your blog with at least Author-level permission, or B) for you to run the simulator with the latest code.

If you’ve got an iPhone dev environment and prefer to run tests yourself, the expected behavior is that if all else fails, the application will bring up a view and ask for the user to input the xmlrpc endpoint URL manually.  If the endpoint is available, the blog should successfully load.  The new code tries some other things first, so if your blog loads without this manual input view, so much the better.

This input view should appear after saying “OK” to the error message about the endpoint.  Let me know if the new version of the app gives you the error above but does not bring up a view to add the XMLRPC endpoint manually.

Since this resolves mostly to a support issue, please read my post and add your responses on the support site here: http://iphone.forums.wordpress.org/topic/xml-rpc-service-for-you-blog-cannot-be-found/page/2?replies=32

Thank you,

John Bickerstaff

Ah, that may be the cause of my problems with Scribefire then. After searching around for a while, I found that my issues MIGHT be related to XML RPC. Then I saw this.

Please let me know if there is any chance that this issue could affect my ability to se Scribefire in Firefox to post to my blog.

    Thanks!

@mike, I believe scribfire also uses XML-RPC so that would make sense.

Nevermind, turned off the plugin iWPhone which loads a specific theme for iPhone users and now it works.

  4. Hans

Seems my first comment didn’t show up, but anyway if anyone is using iWPhone then turn it off to get access to the xmlrpc file and then the app will work.

    1. Raanan Bar-Cohen

@hans, thanks for letting us know. I’m going to contact the plugin author to see if they can test that.

I have this problem but no iphone dev

perhabs it happens because of the privacy plugin i use.
You have to login to see anything

    kind regards

    1. Raanan Bar-Cohen

@stejan — if the privacy plugin restricts XML-RPC logins that would make sense that the app can’t connect.

Found a temporary fix: change the theme to the default, add blog on iphone, change theme back.
Don’t know if this was posted anywhere else, but I could not find it. Hope this helps until a new version is out.

    1. Raanan Bar-Cohen

@abbie — that probably indicated that your initial theme didn’t have an RSD tag pointing to your XML-RPC file. See FAQ for details: http://iphone.wordpress.org/faq/

  8. Abbie

@raanan: checked. It’s been there the whole time. Only thing I can think of is maybe the js threw it of?

    1. Raanan Bar-Cohen

@Abbie — could be. In the next release of the app we’ll have a much better way to detect the XML-RPC end point. If you have the iPhone simulator you can check out the latest code in “trunk” to see if that works for you.

    Ladies & Gents,

I have an iPhone 3GS and I want to use the WordPress App but have had the same problems all along. (XML-RPC issues) I had my tech guys at Boston Logic work on it and they said there is no resolution yet, but I just thought I’d check in… a lot of this is WAY over my head but I desperately want to blog from my iPhone! Help!

    1. Raanan Bar-Cohen

@Will — can you post to the forums with details such as which WP version you are running, thanks.

How can I quit a blog in the iPhone application?
I can’t manage two blogs at same time, and i can’t delete one. I can’t use this app in this moment.
    Thanks

    1. John Bickerstaff

To delete a blog, touch the “>” sign in the blog list view… This should bring up a new view that allows you to change a password or delete a blog.

My daughter is having this same issue except she has the curve 8310. But her service is through AT&T. I can’t seem to figure out why she keeps getting this error. I have the storm through verizon and I’m wondering if it has anything to do with AT&t.

Any help with fixing this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    1. John Bickerstaff

What software is your daugher using on her 8310?

  12. Heather Ordover

I know I’m late but would be happy to test anythingif it means I could get this to work!
Let me know if you need another tester!
    Heather

    1. John Bickerstaff

Thanks Heather. We’re good for now. I think I can call testing complete. There may be edge cases, but the fix is working very well.

  13. mpu

Thanks for the information. It’s been very useful for me!

Unfortunately, I must be one of teh “edge cases”. I bought the iPhone to be able to do my blogs on the run but amd facing the XML-rpc issue. A lot of the technical side is over my head but I need ot get this running. Is there any fix I can apply?
    Thanks,
